All of us at Mount Mary are definitely in a celebratory mood! Our official transition to Mount Mary University happened on July 1, 2013, but in reality it’s been a process that started long before that and will continue in the coming months. The Mount Mary community has been energized and busy with all the tasks that accompany this milestone, reminding me that the SSNDs must have had similar feelings when they introduced Mount Mary College to the Milwaukee community in 1929.
When I think about all the changes that have taken place during Mount Mary’s first century of offering education that transforms lives, the one constant that remains clear is the dedication of both the School Sisters of Notre Dame and those who have followed them. People have always been at the heart of what distinguishes a Mount Mary education and that will continue to be true as we proudly re-introduce ourselves as Mount Mary University.
You will notice external changes on the campus and surrounding neighborhood as we reveal an updated visual identity of our new status. These outward signs also symbolize some of the dynamic changes that are also taking place internally. Mount Mary University will now distinguish itself as a “creative campus,” emphasizing innovation and imagination in all disciplines, stressing problem- finding, problem -solving and collaboration across the curriculum. This is an exciting endeavor; one that has been enthusiastically embraced by faculty and staff, and one that I’m sure will prepare students for guaranteed success in their chosen professions. It seems so appropriate to begin our second hundred years with the same bold and visionary thinking with which Mount Mary began.
The celebratory mood I mentioned earlier is also closely connected to our Centennial Year celebration which has included many activities since last fall. The Centennial Celebration will close this fall following an expanded Alumnae Reunion week and another high-interest Transforum, offered by our Women’s Leadership Institute. I so appreciate your interest in Mount Mary University’s growth and vitality. Our past and future successes have been fostered not only by the dedication of the Mount Mary community, but also by you.
Please be assured of my lasting gratitude.Eileen Schwalbach, Ph.D.
