A summer leadership camp like no other

The Summer Leadership Institute is a three ½ day residential program, which empowers, educates and encourages high school and college women to develop their potential as creative and transformative leaders through self-awareness, value clarification and clear commitment to action. Our mission is to help students develop the knowledge, attitudes and thinking practices to succeed as socially responsible, effective leaders. Participants in the program will be exposed to creative curricula, lectures and expressive learning workshops taught by Mount Mary's faculty and real world leaders from throughout the Milwaukee community.

The Institute has changed me. I am more confident, more empathetic, more sure of who I am. I learned that the power to create immense change and become a leader starts within. I’m so excited to apply the skills I have developed.

What you will learn at the Summer Leadership Institute

Sessions for your career and personal development led by Milwaukee business leaders and Mount Mary faculty:
  • leadership development
  • public speaking
  • networking
  • confidence building
  • mindfulness
  • teamwork

The program is sponsored each year by community organizations interested in developing strong leaders.  We thank the following for seeing the potential in programs like this and for investing in the lives of these women: Forest County Potawatomi Foundation, Brady Corporation and the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Who is eligible to apply?

We are committed to including women from diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, racial and educational backgrounds in each Summer Leadership Institute. Any Wisconsin college student enrolled in a Wisconsin college or university; Wisconsin residents attending school outside of the state; and students who graduated at the end of the 2016 fall semester or in spring 2017 are all eligible. We also admit a number of incoming college freshmen as well. We encourage all students with all kinds of interests and backgrounds to apply because we believe that everyone who attends benefits in some way. Diversity of views and positions on interests is considered a strength of the program.

When does the Summer Leadership Institute take place?

June 20 – 23, 2017

Do I live in the residence halls during this leadership institute?

Yes. This program provides the opportunity to meet incredible women from around the state who will mentor, coach, and teach you important skills for the future. The residential nature of the program creates an intensive learning experience that cannot be replicated with a series of one-day programs. This experience encourages friendship and camaraderie, building mentoring relationships and extends the learning experience beyond the formal program sessions, as conversations continue over meals and throughout the evening.

What does the program cost?

The cost to attend is $500 per student. This includes all meals, lodging, activities and program materials. The Summer Leadership Institute is supported by grants from corporate sponsors and individuals that cover some costs for this program. Students are required to provide contact information for a faculty or staff member at their school who agrees to assist them in obtaining funding for the program fee, should they be selected for the program. Some scholarships are available. Students will be responsible for their travel to/from Mount Mary University at the start and conclusion of the program. Students may want to bring a small amount of spending money for personal expenses, but it is not necessary.

When is the registration deadline?

The program will be held June 20 – 23, 2017 at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee. The deadline for applications to the program is May 19, 2017.
