Degree Requirements and Curriculum

The graduate program in community counseling includes 48 credits:

  • 9 credits in assessment and training
  • 21 credits in counseling core courses
  • 15 credits in community counseling concentration area
  • 3 credits in elective coursework

Students who are interested and committed to pursuing a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology or a related discipline have the option of taking 6-9 research/thesis credits and completing a thesis in place of the Comprehensive Exam.

Students will complete 700 hours of clinical/internship experiences in selected community sites including:

  • One semester of supervised practicum in counseling (8 hours per week, total of 100 hours on-site)
  • Two semesters of counseling internship (20 hours per week, total of 300 hours each semester on-site).

Internship placements are made in community counseling sites appropriate to the student's interests.

Professional counselor portfolio and student self-assessment are used as a components of the program's evaluation process.
