Post-Master’s
Certificates in Community, Clinical Mental Health, & School Counseling
Post-Master’s Certificates in Counseling are designed for students
who have previously received a master’s degree in the counseling
field and who seek an additional area of concentration in which
to be licensed. In most cases specific licenses are granted by a
state regulating and licensing boards and in some cases licensing
or credentialing may be awarded by a national professional organization.
Requirements: Post-Master’s Certificates
are designed to meet the needs of the individual student, requirements
may vary based on length of time since obtaining the original master’s
degree, type of credentialing/licensure seeking, and curriculum
content of the original master’s degree. In most cases, if the time
period since obtaining the original counseling degree has been less
than 7 years, students will typically need to complete 12-21 credit
hours of course work. In some cases, students may also need to complete
a minimum of 500 hours in a relevant practicum
/internship experience.
