Diagnostic
Medical Sonography Program
In an effort to meet the growing demand for professionally trained
sonographers/vascular technologists, Mount Mary College recently
added diagnostic medical sonography major to its undergraduate
program offerings.
Sonography is a diagnostic medical procedure using high frequency
sound waves to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues,
or blood flow inside the body. It is used in the detection and treatment
of heart disease, heart attack, and vascular disease.
Diagnostic medical sonography is a four-year program. The first
two years of the program are spent at the Mount Mary College campus
completing general education courses and prerequisites for the major.
The last two years of coursework are completed at Wheaton
Franciscan Healthcare-St. Francis hospitals. Transfer students must complete
a minimum of 32 credits at Mount Mary College prior to begin any coursework at Wheaton
Franciscan Healthcare-St. Francis.
Upon successful completion of coursework, students receive a Bachelor
of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (B.S., A.R.D.M.S. and/or
B.S., R.B.T.). Students can qualify to receive one or both of the
above degree designations based on which board examinations a student
qualifies for and passes.
