dieteticsSupervised Practice/Practicums

Students receive more than 1,200 hours of supervised practice as part of the Coordinated Program at Mount Mary. This supervised practice is necessary to become eligible for the registration exam upon graduation and equips students with the skills for entry level dietetic practice.

In the first three semesters of the Coordinated Program students are accompanied by Mount Mary faculty to their supervised practice sites. During the final semester of their senior year students complete 20 weeks of supervised practice under the direction of dietitians in area institutions, organizations and companies. During the final semester students complete practicums in the three main areas of dietetic practice for the following time periods:

  • Eight to ten weeks in clinical nutrition
  • Four weeks in community/consumer nutrition
  • Six to eight weeks in food service management settings

Practicum opportunities are offered at locations such as:

  • Hospitals
  • Outpatient clinics
  • School districts
  • Nursing homes
  • Businesses
  • Public health departments
  • Food service companies
  • Social service organizations
