Special Emphases within the Master of Arts in Education Program

Available to those choosing Subject-Area Specialization Option 1

Note: The coursework for the various emphases is incorporated as part of the student’s regular graduate program. Completion of the adaptive education or reading emphases may lead to eligibility for a specific DPI license in these areas.

Master of Arts in Education with Special Emphasis in Art

  • Requires 12 credits of studio art for subject-area specialization
  • Papers and projects may be art-related
  • Action research project will be done in your art classroom

Master of Arts in Education with Special Emphasis in Adaptive Education

  • Requires 12 credits of adaptive education course work for subject-area
    specialization
  • Papers and projects may be related to adaptive education
  • Action research project relative to adaptive education will be done in
    your own classroom
  • Completion of the 12 credits of adaptive education courses can lead to
    DPI License #859.

Master of Arts in Education with Special Emphasis in English

  • Requires 9 credits of English course work for subject-area specialization
  • Papers and projects may be English-related
  • Action research project will be done in your English classroom

Master of Arts in Education with Special Emphasis in Reading

  • Requires 12 credits of reading course work for subject-area specialization
  • Papers and projects may be reading education-related
  • Action research project related to reading education will be done in your classroom
  • Completion of the following 18 credits of reading education courses can lead to DPI License #316:

EDU 502 Teaching Reading and Language Arts in the Middle/Secondary School
EDU 510 Developmental Reading for the Middle Childhood (Gr. 3-5)
EDU 511 Developmental Reading for Early Childhood (Pre-K-Grade 2)
EDU 522 Celebrate Children’s Literature
EDU 523 Reading and Learning Disabilities
EDU 559 Assessment and Instruction of Literacy Difficulties
