Early Adolescence/Adolescence Certification to Masters Program For those who already have a bachelor’s degree and are now pursuing a teaching license, your studies are divided into three areas of concentration:
General studies requirements may be fulfilled by coursework completed for your bachelor’s degree. Some of the courses included in the professional education sequence may be taken for graduate credit and may be applied toward Mount Mary’s Master of Arts in Education program upon the completion of certification. Through this combination of courses in general education, in your chosen discipline and in the professional education sequence of courses, as well as through a variety of field experiences and student teaching you will prepare to assume the roles and responsibilities of a middle or high school teacher.
How Long Will It Take to Complete the Program? Much depends on your goals and personal schedule. The professional education sequence for initial certification for most programs possibly may be completed in evenings and summers (with the exception of the full semester of student teaching) in two years. Some students seeking initial certification also choose to enroll in the daytime classes typically taken by undergraduate students. However, the total time required will depend on the prior credits you have in the content field for which you are seeking certification and the particular requirements and policies of the academic department. While Mount Mary College offers courses in the day and evening, some academic departments offer courses during the day only. In order to determine if this program will meet your needs, you need to meet with the chairperson of the department offering the major in which you wish to become certified. You need to have your previous credits evaluated and to discuss scheduling procedures with the academic department chair.
