Occupational Therapy Bachelor’s/Master’s Admission Requirements
The Bachelor of Science/Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program has rigorous admission standards above the minimum required for general admission to Mount Mary University.
Note: If you are an occupational therapy assistant, Mount Mary will work with you to determine how your previous experience and prior college coursework can count for credit toward earning both your bachelor’s and master’s degree in occupational therapy.
Step 1: Initial Eligibility – Apply for Admission to Mount Mary University
Step 2: Initial Eligibility – Submit Occupational Therapy Program Application
After you are accepted to Mount Mary, submit the Occupational Therapy Program Application.
Note: Official college transcripts from all outside college institutions attended will be retrieved from the Admission Office to be used as part of the initial eligibility process. All these items are reviewed once per month by the Occupational Therapy Admission and Retention Committee to determine initial eligibility for admission to the program. Applicants will be notified by mail or email of their initial eligibility or ineligibility for the program.
Initial eligibility does not admit a person into the Occupational Therapy program—it only determines if the applicant meets the initial academic standards required for admission. See the Occupational Therapy Admission Policy for details.
If you are a transfer student, contact your Mount Mary admission counselor as soon as possible to receive guidance about which courses will transfer.
Step 3: Enroll at Mount Mary, Take Prerequisite Coursework & Maintain High Academic Performance
Undergraduate students seeking admission to the occupational therapy program must:
- have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- have grades of B or higher in all psychology, composition, sociology/anthropology courses, as well as in the occupational therapy orientation and medical terminology courses
- have a BC or higher in biology coursework (including anatomy and physiology courses)
- have completed all of the university’s liberal arts core requirements
- have completed at least 100 credits of total coursework
Prerequisite coursework that must be completed include the following (or equivalent transfer courses):
- SYM 102: College Composition II
- BIO 103: Introductory Biology
- BIO 211: Human Anatomy
- BIO 212: Human Physiology
- PSY 103: Introductory Psychology
- PSY 214: Developmental Psychology
- OCT 101: O.T. Orientation
- OCT 201: Medical Terminology
If you do not meet the specified academic standards each semester, you will no longer be eligible for admission consideration and will be notified in writing. See the Occupational Therapy Admission Policy for details.
Transfer students: If you have completed prerequisite courses at another institution, Mount Mary occupational therapy faculty will review those courses to determine which ones are equivalent to Mount Mary courses.
Step 4: Submit Remaining Occupational Therapy Application Materials
The occupational therapy program reviews completed applications twice per calendar year for admission to the program. Application review dates are January 15 and June 15 each year.
If you were found initially eligible, you will be notified to submit the remaining application materials as follows:
- Two Letters of Recommendation
- Application Narrative Questions
- Shadowing Forms A and B
- Human Service Forms A and B
When the above application materials are received and ALL prerequisite coursework is completed, an application is considered complete and will be reviewed at the next application review date. See the Occupational Therapy Admission Policy for details.
Notice to undergraduate students: All of these requirements must be met before starting the final two-year sequence of the program in fall. There are no exceptions to this rule. If an applicant does not meet this criteria at the time of reviewing the master’s program application, determination will be made whether the criteria realistically can be met before starting the program in fall or if the application should be deferred and considered for admission the following year.
