Miller Named 2010 Coach of the Year
December 21, 2010 -- Kelsi Miller, Mount Mary's volleyball coach and Assistant Athletic Director, was just named 2010 Coach of the Year by the Association of Division III Independents.

Angel Receives the Excellence in Nonfiction Award
December 13, 2010 -- English faculty member, Ann Angel, received the Young Adult Library Services Association's Excellence in Nonfiction Award for her recently published book, Janis Joplin: Rise Up Singing. English Faculty Member Receives Award for Publication
December 13, 2010 -- Waiting Out the Storm by JoAnn Macken, faculty member with Mount Mary’s English department, has received the 2010 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award in the preschool and early school years categories. Read more.

Arches Receives Double Recognition
Arches
, the student newspaper of Mount Mary College, was just given an honor rating of "First Class with One Mark of Distinction for Writing and Editing" from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP). The publication also received third place for "General Excellence" in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association's annual collegiate competition.

Two students also received special honors. Kameryn Opatken won third place for graphics and Shannon Somers-Mueller won an honorable mention for column writing.

Marian Art Gallery Exhibit Showcases Photography and Study Abroad Programs
December 8, 2010 -- Seeing Peru: Layered Realities, a new exhibit featuring photography by Eddee Daniel, will be on display January 16 – February 12, 2011 in Mount Mary College’s Marian Art Gallery. An artist’s reception will take place Sunday, January 30, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Read the release, December 8.

Leona Knobloch-Nelson will be a featured panelist at M Magazine's Best Home Seminar entitled Best Home: Psychology of Design. She is joined by other "trend watchers" at the event which took place on December 7, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Counselors from China Visit Mount Mary College
November 12, 2010 -- Chinese educators visited Mount Mary College as part of an educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and the Chinese Ministry of Education. The group of 12 career counselors from universities throughout China were on campus November 12th to learn more about the ways in which the Advising and Career Development office assists graduates.

Michelle Mueller from Information Technology has been elected to the national Jenzabar EX Advisory Board and will serve a three year term. Nominations were received and voted on by customers across the county. Jenzabar supports Mount Mary's institutional database needs.

Lynn Sprangers Joins Mount Mary College
October 29, 2010 -- Lynn Sprangers, a well-known business and civic leader, and award winning journalist, has been named Executive in Residence for Women’s Leadership at Mount Mary College. This position was developed as part of a new strategic planning initiative focused on strengthening the College’s impact in the community. Find out more:

October 22, 2010 -- Featuring works by The Binders Guild, the exhibit runs October 31 – November 27. Released October 22.

Interior Design Workshop for Students and Professionals
October 22, 2010 -- Mount Mary hosted "Render Your Way to a Career," an Interior Design Workshop with presenters William Feldman, AIA, of William Feldman Studio and Matthew Kerr, IIDA, ASAI, of Zimmerman Architectural, on Friday, October 22. The workshop was sponsored by the Interior Design Department and the ASID/IIDA Student Chapter.

Archdiocese Event held at Mount Mary, October 21
October 21, 2010 -- The 2010 Pallium Lecture, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, featured Rev. James Martin, SJ, culture editor of America, the national Catholic Weekly magazine published by the Jesuits, and author of several books including My Life with the Saints. His lecture, “Laughing with the Saints: Joy, Humor & Laughter in the Spiritual Life,” looks at practical lessons we can learn from the Saints for our lives today. Rev. College Sees Record Enrollment
October 20, 2010 -- Total enrollment at Mount Mary College currently stands at 1,963 students, the highest in the College’s history, according to Dave Wegener, Vice President for Enrollment Services. Of the 1,963 enrolled students, 1,424 are undergraduates and 539 are graduate students. Released October 20.

Mount Mary Students Stand Out at Fashion Event
October 25, 2010 -- Congratulations to two Mount Mary Fashion Design students who competed for awards at the Sixth Annual RunUp to the Runway hosted October 15 by the Milwaukee Art Museum as part of their After Dark programming. Allison Topczewski won first place for her tailored camel coat and Paxia Vang won second place for her red gown with removable neck piece. View a slide show from the event.

Mount Mary College Hosts Project RETURN’s Annual Event
October 11, 2010 -- Mount Mary College hosted “Celebrate the Return,” Project RETURN’s 30th anniversary celebration featuring Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ,  author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States. Prejean gave the keynote address and also received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Mount Mary College. The event took place on Saturday, October 30th. Read the release, October 11

October 7, 2010 -- Mount Mary College hosted two lecturers as part of the Diversity Lecture Series in September and October.

  • On September 28, 2010, Paulina de Haan, Community Coordinator for Milwaukee Safe Streets Initiative, spoke on "Advocating for Safer Neighborhoods through the Collaborative Spirit of Restorative Justice.”

Vice President of Finance honored by the Business Journal
October 2010 -- Reyes Gonzalez, V.P. for Finance and Administration, received the Business Journal's CFO of the year award for the nonprofit sector. For this program, The Business Journal solicited nominations, with winners being selected by a judges’ panel comprising financial professionals from the Milwaukee area.The awards program profiled 15 Milwaukee-area chief financial officers or heads of finance who are making a difference within their companies or organizations, the accounting profession and communities. The program is designed to recognize the important work CFOs do in making southeast Wisconsin firms successful. Find out more.

"Excellence in Teaching" Award Recipients Announced
September 28, 2010 -- Mount Mary College has presented its 2010 “Excellence in Teaching” awards to two faculty members. Ann Angel, M.F.A., assistant professor of English, received the full-time award, and Lynne Berendsen, Ph.D., adjunct instructor in Psychology, received the part-time award. Read the release.

Mount Mary College Hosts Symposium 2010: Mission in Action
September 21, 2010 -- On October 7, 2010, Mount Mary held an academic symposium where local and regional members of the higher education community led breakout sessions and Edwina Gateley was the keynote speaker. September 2010 -- The annual Starving Artists Show® was recently ranked 61 on Art Fair Source Book's list of Top 100 Fine Art Fairs in the United States for 2011. The Source Book publishes reviews and rankings of shows based on the gross sales of the show.

College Receives $1.1 Million Trio Grant
August 16, 2010 -- Mount Mary College has received a $1.1 million TRIO grant from the federal government. The five-year grant will allow Mount Mary to develop and implement a TRIO Student Support Services program entitled, “The Promise Program: Transforming Possibilities into Success.” The program will focus on increasing retention and graduation rates of the College’s low-income, first-generation or disabled students. Mount Mary hosted the Second Annual Banner Boys Charity Basketball Game on Friday, August 6
August 2010 -- Former UW-Milwaukee basketball star, Joah Tucker, sponsored the fundraising event which raised money for the Jared C. Bruce Academy in Milwaukee. College to Host 25th Annual Conference
August 2010 -- Mount Mary College, in collaboration with Alverno College, will host the 25th Annual Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies Conference on Friday April 8, 2011. Can the Globe Go Green – Environmental Sustainability, Peace and the Threats of War will feature keynote speaker Randall Amster, professor of peace studies at Prescott College in Arizona and executive director of the Peace and Justice Studies Association. New Corporate Board members announced
July 29, 2010 -- Three new members have joined Mount Mary College’s Corporate Board, President Eileen Schwalbach announced. The Corporate Board has oversight of Mount Mary’s Board of Trustees including responsibility for governance matters, financial decisions and institutional leadership. July 23, 2010 -- Mount Mary College Vice President of External Relations Donna Gastevich has announced the addition of personnel to the External Relations Department. Cynthia Echols has been appointed Senior Director External Relations & Campaign Manager. Mary Kate Nava has been appointed Major Gifts Officer. Mary McCann has been appointed Discovery Officer. Tyler Curtis has been appointed Grant Writer.

July 9, 2010 -- Mount Mary College signed a Degree Completion Agreement with Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) on June 30, 2010 that will allow WCTC associate degree graduates to transfer credits to Mount Mary College to earn a Liberal Studies bachelor’s degree. Find out more:

Mount Mary College has received two new grants
July 7, 2010 -- The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation awarded the College a $500,000 grant to support construction of a Student Success Center in the College’s Haggerty Library. The new Center will provide welcoming gathering spaces and collaborative work stations for students as well as promote academic engagement through integrated resources and services.

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to Mount Mary to design and implement Students
Building Bridges, a new program for college students from diverse backgrounds. The initiative will pilot during the 2010-
11 academic year and will provide 50-75 college women the opportunity to develop relationships across ethnic and racial
identities. With over 85% of Mount Mary graduates remaining in the Milwaukee area, the skills and experiences they
gain during the program will later assist the community in reaching its full economic and social potential. Read the press release.
