Choosing a Major—Academic Areas of Study at Mount Mary

Do you wonder which bachelor’s degree program or career is right for you? If you are undecided about an eventual career path, you are not alone. Perhaps you are finishing high school or are contemplating a career change and are worried about this important decision.

The good news is that Mount Mary College offers many resources to help students understand their own unique interests, strengths and explore possible career options.

According to the National Academic Advising Association, anywhere between 20 and 50 percent of new college students are undecided about their educational and career futures. Whether a student is deciding between two majors or is completely uncertain which program area she would like to pursue, Mount Mary can help students in the selection process.

Helpful Resources Available

The Advising & Career Development Office offers:

  • Resources to pinpoint academic and career strengths
  • Information about how to access job opportunities
  • Access to professional development resources such as the
    Discover Program and Myers Briggs indicator

Students entering Mount Mary College without declaring a specific major are assigned the Director of Advising & Career Development as their advisor. With the help of this specially trained advisor who understands their strengths and areas of interest, students are able to select a major that best suits them.

Exploring Opportunities

Mount Mary understands the value of having students obtain hands-on experience in various areas to assist them in selecting an eventual career path. In addition to completing a broad-based liberal arts curriculum, most majors include an introductory course to help
students gain a general overview of the major and subsequent career opportunities.

Students who are uncertain about their major are encouraged to take introductory courses in different areas. Samples of those courses include:

  • The Profession of Dietetics
  • Introduction to Fashion Careers
  • Orientation to Interior Design
  • Orientation to Teaching
  • Introduction to Social Work and Careers in Behavioral Science

Mount Mary College currently offers more than 60 different areas of academic study. A few of the most popular divisions include Arts & Design, Health Sciences, Business and Education.
