Four Mount Mary students awarded prestigious study abroad scholarships

This academic school year, four Mount Mary students have been awarded a combined $22,000 in scholarship funding for study abroad programs or global internship programs designed to assist students, particularly first-generation college students and students from underrepresented populations, to study abroad.

“Study abroad professionals are innovating to provide opportunities for students to have international experiences, for example, through virtual global internships, even if international travel remains limited.”
International Studies Director Nan Metzger

Patricia Golden, fashion design major, is Mount Mary's first ever Freeman-ASIA Scholarship recipient. The Freeman-ASIA Scholarship is a nationally competitive scholarship that provides funding for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.

Patricia is planning to study abroad in Japan during the spring 2021 semester, and was awarded a $5,000 Freeman-ASIA scholarship to support her study abroad.

Four Mount Mary University students have been awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships. The Gilman Scholarship provides scholarships to outstanding undergraduate Pell Grant recipients who, due to financial constraints, might not otherwise study abroad.

These students are:

  • Vanessa Garnica, International Studies/Spanish major, was awarded $4,000 to support her study abroad in Spain (planned for spring 2021).
  • In addition to the Freeman-ASIA Scholarship, Patricia Golden, Fashion Design major, was awarded a $4,000 Gilman Scholarship to support her study abroad in Japan (planned for spring 2021).
  • Christina Prado-Lopez, Fashion Design & International Studies/Spanish major, was awarded $4,000 to support her study abroad.
  • Jasmine Perry, Fashion Design major, was awarded $5,000 to support her participation in the MMU Fashion Paris study abroad (Jan 2021).

Since 2012, 27 Mount Mary students have been recipients of the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, together receiving a total of $99,000.

Given the current pandemic situation, students are working closely with Nan Metzger, director of international studies, to claim their scholarship funding either to use in the next year or to use for a virtual, global internship if international travel is not possible.

“During these challenging times, study abroad professionals are innovating to provide opportunities for students to have international experiences, for example, through virtual global internships, even if international travel remains limited. Safety is always a number one priority, and supporting students to make the most of opportunities afforded them,” Metzger said.
