Potawatomi Hotel & Casino donates $25,000

Funds will provide scholarships and offset costs of Summer Leadership Academy

Mount Mary University’s Summer Leadership Academy was among the 20 youth-serving organizations randomly selected to receive gifts of $25,000 each as part of Potawatomi Hotel & Casino’s Heart of Canal Street campaign.

“We feel so blessed to be chosen as a 2023 Heart of Canal Street Charity,” said Keri Schroeder, executive director of the Leadership Institute and the Summer Leadership Academy. “This generous funding will make Mount Mary's Summer Leadership Academy accessible to all young women interested in developing their leadership skills and exploring their path beyond high school. Specifically, funds will be used to offset MMU's costs and provide free or reduced tuition to qualified participants.”

With the intention of helping to improve the lives of children by putting food on tables, helping kids stay safe and encouraging an appreciation of the arts, the Heart of Canal Street program has contributed more than $20 million to hundreds of local children’s charities. This year, funds were raised after Potawatomi Hotel & Casino committed to match all slot jackpots won, up to $500,000, between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Black Friday. Guests won more than $587,000 in jackpots during that time frame.
