Winter graduates encouraged to embrace change while maintaining connections

The Mount Mary University 2024 December commencement ceremony centered around the importance of embracing an ever-changing future while remaining connected to foundational support systems.

Faculty speaker Trish Kuehnl, '86, '13, shared her story of adaptation and transformation. As a college student, Kuehnl explored several different majors before finding her vocational calling. After a successful corporate career in merchandise management, she eventually returned to campus to earn a master's degree and step into a teaching role within the Fashion Business major.

Kuehnl described the strong feeling of belonging that she continues to experience at Mount Mary, and encouraged graduates to maintain a connection to the university even as they embark on new educational and professional journeys.

"You're starting a new chapter in the story of you," said Kuehnl. "But remember that you will always be a part of something very special [here]."

Alumni speaker Ann Tesmer, '94, '01, echoed these sentiments, reminding graduates of "the beauty of community," and encouraging them to remain in touch with the networks they have built.

Student commencement speaker Rochelle Parker '24 also shared words of inspiration with the graduating class. Parker spoke about her determination to complete her degree, even when faced with setbacks and loss. She thanked friends, family and faculty who had helped her along the way, and reminded students to embrace their unique strengths to overcome odds and achieve their goals.

"We were made to transform, not conform," Parker said, reminding the audience that the past does not limit future potential.
