From Courtroom to Catwalk: Fashion Student Takes a Unique Path to Creative Vision
Student Meg Troy came to fashion via an unconventional route. After a successful twelve-year law career, Troy wanted to take a pause and embrace her creative side. Encouraged by her husband and three children, she decided to pursue a certificate in fashion at Mount Mary University.
“I wanted to try something new and learn how to make things,” said Troy. “I’d always had an interest in clothing, and I decided that it was now or never.”
In her classes at Mount Mary, Troy learned the essentials of garment design and construction. She debuted her work during the 2024 CREO student fashion show, modeling her original designs for the audience. Troy will once again take part in the annual fashion show this May, showcasing a stylish collection ranging from workwear to casual clothing. She will also participate in the fashion “upcycling” challenge, which asks students to transform secondhand donations into runway-ready couture.
Although she envisions eventually transitioning back into legal practice, Troy expresses gratitude for the opportunity to explore her creative side and encourages others to pursue their passion.
“I’ve loved learning something new,” she said. “And it’s been really fun to step outside of my comfort zone.”
