Theology

Explore Transcendent Dimensions of Life. Through the critical study of the quest for God, theology seeks to understand implications for meaning in the range of human history, relationships and experience. Studying theology also can motivate you to critically reflect upon your own specific faith perspective. Mount Mary University’s Theology department offers opportunities to understand and find meaning in the Judeo-Christian tradition, with an openness to both Christian and non-Christian viewpoints.

A Theology degree helps prepare students to pursue interests in various ministries, graduate school, teaching, human services and personal enrichment.  A major, minor and post-baccalaureate certificate in Theology are each available, as are a major and a minor in religious education.

A Theology major can easily be coupled with another major, such as Art Therapy, Spanish, Justice or Global Studies. The Religious Education major/minor is a second, more specialized Theology concentration. In conjunction with Mount Mary’s Education program, it provides preparation to teach in grades 6-12.

Theology majors are encouraged to complete an internship to enrich their experience outside the academic setting. Religious Education majors will complete student teaching. These real-world experiences provide opportunities for students to apply what they have learned in the classroom and develop a clearer understanding of theological principles.

Use the World as Your Classroom. Mount Mary Theology students have opportunities to study abroad. Every other year, the Theology program offers a course in Rome. Its overseas courses count toward the requirements for the major. This three-week Rome program integrates lectures with visits to archaeological sites, museums and historically significant churches, all in the heart of Roman Catholic Christianity.
