Elementary and Middle School Education
The Elementary and Middle School Education Program prepares future teachers to work with students from four-year-old kindergarten through ninth grade.
In this program, you’ll learn teaching strategies that are based on research and designed to support all students. There’s a strong focus on making sure every learner has fair access to a high-quality education, no matter their background.
The program helps you build the knowledge and skills you need to plan engaging lessons, teach different subjects, and check students’ progress. You’ll learn how to work with a wide range of ages and learning needs.
You also have enough room in your schedule to choose a minor like Cross-Categorial Special Education, English as a Secomd Language, Bilingual Education, subject-specific areas like English, History, or Spanish, or other areas that may interest you.
Post-baccalaureate students meet the same program requirements as undergraduates but may take some coursework at the graduate level which can lead to the Master of Arts in Education.

Program outcomes are based on the Ten Wisconsin Teacher Standards, the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation Elementary Teacher Preparation Standards, and the Association for Middle Level Education Teacher Preparation Standards
Graduates of the Elementary and Middle School Education Program (K-9) will be able to
- Understand the key concepts, principles, theories, and research that shape developmentally appropriate programs in elementary and middle schools.
- Understand and reflect on how children and adolescents grow and learn and use this knowledge to create learning environments that are safe, respectful, inclusive, equitable, supportive, and appropriately challenging for all students.
- Understand the content standards for the subjects being taught, including the main ideas, skills, and practices, and apply them across different subject areas.
- Make thoughtful, informed decisions about teaching based on knowledge of students and assessment of their learning and plan a variety of effective instructional and assessment strategies to support meaningful learning.
- Grow as a professional by advocating for all students, working with families and communities, collaborating with others, reflecting on practice, continuing to learn, participating in the profession, and acting ethically with a positive mindset.
